The game Briscola is one of Italy’s most popular trick-taking games, and derives from the French game Brusquembille, which was already played in France in the early 18th century. There are many variants of the game, which are widely played in countries around the Mediterranean Sea. Within the many types of Briscola, the one known as Briscola Chiamata is particularly interesting, and is played by 5 players. The translation of the game into English is “called trump”.

Our version of the game fully follows the standard game played in Italy, but the cards have been adapted to make the rules easier to understand (by writing all relevant information on the cards, and re-ordering their power according to modern conventions. Note also that the original game is played counter-clockwise, but this version will instead follow modern clockwise conventions). The rules for the 2-5 player game “Briscola” (“Trump”) are also provided.
